Santa Monica Chorus sings a specific type of a cappella called barbershop. Barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied vocal music characterized by consonant four-part chords for every melody note in a predominantly homophonic texture. The melody is consistently sung by the lead, with the tenor harmonizing above the melody, the bass singing the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completing the chord. Santa Monica Chorus is a chapter within Sweet Adelines Region 11: Sequoia Pacifica.

Sweet Adelines International is a highly respected worldwide organization of singers (women and other marginalized genders) committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance.

Barbershop Harmony Society

Originally founded as Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA), the BHS's mission is to bring people together in harmony and fellowship to enrich lives through singing.

Harmony, Inc. is vibrant organization of women of all ages, recognized for world-class singing in the barbershop style and promoting bonds of friendship.

Additionally, there are a number of barbershop organizations that are regionally specific to places outside of the United States.
